Geraniums Up Close

The humble Geranium or Pelargonium...

It's not very often I get too close to these gorgeous plants. They are generally admired from afar, in pots on balconies and terraces all over the world.

My UK friends have to bring them inside during the winter to avoid the frosts, which I thought strange at first as they grow profusely in our gardens  in Queensland. Then after spending a few winters there I can understand why.

Geraniums are very resistant to drought and heat, perfect for our climate. They are putting a royal show on in their patch this morning!

For a simple pop of colour these are delightful. I quite often just pick the flower heads and put them in small glass jars.

Geraniums are lovely, I agree. Here in northerly Alberta Canada, where I live, they are treated as annuals -- they would never survive the winter unless we brought them indoors. Personally I never do, I just start fresh each spring.

The idea of having them all year is 'strange' to us, but wouldn't that be lovely!

Happy Day.........

We have geraniums near the front steps. They are great and are always reliable for a pop of colour. xx

Hi Pam,
Gorgeous pictures. Spring is so much earlier in Qld than here where the cherry blossoms are just starting to flower.
I only grow the somewhat delicate blue geraniums here in the mountains but boy do they grow. I started about 5 years ago with 1 plant that was so tiny it looked too small to have left its mother. But since than, I have divided and divided and always give away heaps. I'll be doing the same again in a few month's time.
Enjoy Spring,
Pamela xx

I have two pots of geraniums near my front steps and they are the most hardy of plants! I am not the best gardener and always forget to water my pot plants but I've had those geraniums for years! Lovely spring pics on a Monday morning!! Christine xx

Geraniums are great plants...especially red ones in terracotta pots...reminds me of holidays in France.
As we head into Autumn here in England, mine are still flowering....the more I neglect to water them, the happier they are!

they are beautiful! they're one of the only things i can grow well, and propagate myself... lol, just break a stem, stick it in the dirt and there's a new plant!
we have family in Europe, in Alp type areas, and they work on them each year. they look stunning in their massive window boxes and balcony boxes, but oh gosh, if i had to do so much work to get mine flowering, i don't know if they'd still be alive today! thank goodness for a moderate climate, even down south here in Melbourne

Hi Pam, we have some at the back door and I have even managed to strike a few which is very easy. Love the images you have shown us with your new camera. ;-)
